the Story
Learning to listen to the living world
How can we learn to listen to the living world, and allow its needs to shape the way we live, learn and design?
Climate change and ecological degradation reveal more than environmental problems: they point to a deeper disconnection between humans and the ecosystems we are part of. While science and technology offer important ways to understand these changes, other forms of knowledge remind us that living well also depends on relationships, reciprocity and care.
The Voices of Nature explores how different ways of knowing can help us rebuild these relationships. Through education, research and experimentation, we bring scientific, ecological, embodied, Indigenous, regenerative and place-based perspectives into dialogue. We explore how these approaches can help young people and citizens reconnect with their surroundings, while also opening new possibilities for spatial designers and municipalities to include the living world in their decisions.
Rather than treating the living world as something separate to observe, manage or design for, we ask what it means to listen, learn and make decisions in relationship with the many beings and systems we share our territories with.
How we gathered
Exploring different ways of listening
Together with Spinsels and TALLER Architects, we are developing complementary learning and research processes that explore how we can listen to and relate with the living world. We bring different knowledge systems and practices into dialogue, from science and biology to regenerative design, Indigenous knowledge, embodied approaches and restorative justice. Through expert conversations, encounters, creative practices and case studies, we explore what each perspective can reveal, and how they might enrich one another.
Learning through experience and exchange
We create opportunities for young people and other participants to explore these perspectives through embodied exercises, dialogue, collaboration with experts and encounters with people working in their territories. These experiences invite participants to question human-centred assumptions, develop new ways of perceiving their surroundings and reflect on their relationships with local ecosystems.
Translating insights into practice
We investigate how these different ways of listening can inform everyday choices, collective action, spatial design and climate adaptation. Through experimentation and the development of practical tools, including a Listening Atlas, we explore how insights can become useful in real places and decision-making processes. An important part of this work is understanding where perspectives complement one another, where tensions arise and how knowledge can be brought together responsibly, without reducing it to a single universal method.

Do you want to support?
We welcome municipalities, provinces, spatial designers and educational partners interested in exploring these approaches with us. By bringing real places, local knowledge and practical challenges into the process, partners can help test how listening to the living world can inform climate adaptation, spatial planning and new learning experiences.
